Okay so it’s day 1 of E3, and we’re going to be keeping you up to date with all the interesting announcements which are made from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
Today, Microsoft officially announced that the 20GB Xbox 360 will be sold at $299 per unit. Here’s what Microsoft had to say:
We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we’re giving it to them at no extra charge. No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you’ll have three times the storage to manage all that great content.
As well as this Microsoft have said they will be releasing a 60GB Xbox 360 for the same price as the old 20GB - $349.
Hold up, if you live outside North America - don’t get too excited:
The 60GB Xbox 360 and the 20GB clearance sale are for the US only. We have not announced any changes in Xbox 360 offerings or pricing in Europe.
A “transforming controller”? I want to know more, Sony!
Shane Bettenhausen, (EGM’s executive editor) recently talked about Sony’s new rumored controller. Apparently, this new controller from Sony will be a “transforming controller” that will pack “multiple configurations”. Call of Duty 5 and Resistance 2 were the games mentioned in connection with the controller.
As some of you already know, Resistance 2 is currently supposed to be released roughly around November this year, so if this controller is indeed real, we should be hearing more news about this controller soon.
If you’re one among the many Sony PlayStation 3 owners in the world, then this news update should make you want to wipe your drool off stat: Ben Heck, master of hacking pretty much everything, has just unveiled his latest creation, the Sony PlayStation 3 laptop. Weighing in at around 16 pounds - you could kill a zombie with it - this baby is pure PlayStation from top to bottom, from the hardware to the logo.
For the tech-oriented of us (or just the terminally-curious), here’s the specs:
Original backwards compatible 60GB model
17-inch LCD HDTV screen: 720p
HDMI-DVI connection
Built-in keyboard, USB ports, stereo speakers, headphone jack
Size: 17 x 13.75 x 3-inches
Weight: 16 pounds
While we can say that it certainly takes a strong, brave man to take apart a Sony PlayStation 3 and then put it back together again into something sleeker and definitely more portable, we have to admit that the thing looks absolutely gorgeous and well worth the dismantling.
If you’re curious as to how to procure one of these babies, then you’ll have to be quick, as it’s being auctioned off for charity. But if you are going to go on a bid war for this expensive piece of machinery, just remember that you’ll also be doing it for a good cause.
A PS3 downgrader is said to be in the making which requires no previous firmware dump. You must have the infectus mod chip for the PS3 to be able to downgrade.
How the downgrade works is that the tool modifies a NAND backup which leaves the PS3 unit thinking it is a lower firmware version than it actually is. You then upgrade using a legit Sony PS3 firmware update to upgrade to a higher firmware version that the PS3 thinks it is. Confused? Here’s an example: You are currently on 2.17 > You use the tool to make the PS3 think it’s 1.5 firmware > You upgrade to 2.0. Theoretically you’re just going from 2.17 -> 2.0.
Here’s a quote from NDT who posted about the hack:
Using this tool you can modify a NAND backup in order to let the console think it has a lower Firmware version, so later you can use an official Sony upgrade PUP file to “downgrade” to the version you need.
It has been tested to patch all PS3 Firmware dumps up to 2.10 so far, but is a work-in-progress as we still need to test re-updating more thoroughly.
Here’s a screenshot of the application in use:

NDT also mentions that the downgrader will not be released unless an exploit in any previous firmware has been found. (Which we think may lead onto people thinking the application is a fake!)
We’ll update you when more news regarding the downloader is released.
If you thought the red ring of death problem on Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles have winded down, especially since reports said its failure rate dropped to 16% from what retailers claim to be over 30%, you may want to reconsider. Just recently, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2008, one of Microsoft’s units on display died to the beat of flashing red rings.
As you’ll see in the video below, at Microsoft’s XNA booth where aspiring developers can learn how to make games, one Xbox 360 malfunctioned and showcased the popular RROD. It does look like its vents are blocked off, so perhaps the heat eventually caused its death.
That’s right folks — it’s the Xbox 360 Elite laptop. We’re not even going to try and pretend to understand how an individual could go about creating this kind of extreme mod to the Microsoft console — needless to say that if there was one man who could do it, Ben is that guy. Luckily for us lay-people, he’s included a graphic breakdown of just about every step on the road to a portable Xbox 360, replete will all the case cracking, innards opening, wire splaying photos you could possibly want or need
The Xbox 360 HD DVD player attachment has just a price drop; from $179.99 to $129.99.
New York (dbTechno) - Microsoft has officially dropped the price of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player from $179.99 to $129.99.
The new price will go into effect immediately in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
This has sweetened the deal greatly for Xbox 360 owners looking for an HD DVD player.
This is because the 5 free HD DVD offer is still valid.
This means that for $129.99 you get the official Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD player, along with 5 free HD DVD movies, not bad at all!
This could be a sign of Microsoft really trying to push HD DVD player sales to get a larger installed user base to compete with the Blu-ray format, which is winning thanks to the fact that the Sony PS3 has a built-in Blu-ray player.
Japanese market analyst Yuta Sakurai is convinced that by the year 2012, Nintendo would have sold 100 million Wii units across the world. Credit that to the market-expanding innovations that Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata and his team implemented. Read the rest of this entry »
