Wii 3.2 update!

26 02 2008

Heads up, Nintendo Wii owners - it’s that time of the month (or year) again where your Wii’s disc slot glows a bright blue. No, it’s not charging up to fire a bright blue beam of sparkly death at whoever’s in front of it - in fact, it’s just saying that there’s a new firmware update available for you to download, and it wants you to download it right now. Before it fires a bright blue beam of sparkly death at you.

So, what’s in this update? Not much. Here’s the direct changelog from Nintendo:

Wii Menu 3.2

  • This update does not affect any prominently-used features or menus; however it does provide some behind the scenes updates that will improve system performance.

That’s not much to go on, is it? However, with the release of a certain first-party game temptingly inching nearer and nearer (read: Super Smash Bros. Brawl), it’s certainly feasible that Nintendo wanted to make sure that the Wii can handle the ridiculous amount of awesome that will be slid into its disc tray come early March. We know we won’t be able to. Updates as we get them!

GDC 08: Xbox 360 suffers RROD.

23 02 2008

If you thought the red ring of death problem on Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles have winded down, especially since reports said its failure rate dropped to 16% from what retailers claim to be over 30%, you may want to reconsider. Just recently, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2008, one of Microsoft’s units on display died to the beat of flashing red rings.

As you’ll see in the video below, at Microsoft’s XNA booth where aspiring developers can learn how to make games, one Xbox 360 malfunctioned and showcased the popular RROD. It does look like its vents are blocked off, so perhaps the heat eventually caused its death.

Time Machine Configurator v1.0

20 02 2008

If you’re still having trouble getting Dark AleX’s Time Machine homebrew app to work on your PlayStation Portable, then don’t worry because we’ve got some good news which may be of use to you.

Homebrew developer Red Squirrel has created a new application which exclusively takes care of all the necessary configuration needed to run the latest version of Time Machine on your PSP.

What makes this particular program convenient for people who want to switch back to any of the previous custom firmware is the fact that you can do this by simply pressing a specific combination of keys, which you can customize on the /TM/config.txt file found in the program.

However, the developer has noted a couple of bugs in the current version of the app. Because of some kernel issues, the NOTE, WLAN, VOL, SCREEN, and HOME keys cannot be used while running Time Machine Configurator. Fortunately, Red Squirrel mentions the possibility of future releases supporting these specific keys some day.

As always, please make sure to take a look at the Readme.txt file for more details on how to install Time Machine Configurator into your PSP handheld. In any case, we hope you enjoy the download!

PS3 Home to come out soon?

18 02 2008

We’ve heard about Warhawk’s integration into PlayStation Home, and we’re incredibly happy about the news. But there’s a rumor that may make us even more giddy about Home. According to this juicy, supposedly insider, tidbit, we’re going to get PlayStation Home “VERY VERY VERY soon”.

According to a PlayStation forum member, he managed to get in touch with an insider, who “shared” his/her knowledge about the development of PS3 games, and the things that a game needs for it to get included in the PlayStation Home network. Check out this excerpt, and read it carefully:

A game must be able to integrate into Home, a game must support “Accomplishments”. Right there, two important things, the PS3 system for achievements is called “Accomplishments”, and Home is coming out VERY VERY VERY Soon.

So a PS3 game should support Accomplishments - which sounds awfully like Xbox 360’s Achievements system - before it can be integrated into Home. It’s pretty much plausible, and the idea of being able to share and brag about your hard earned Accomplishments fits Home’s atmosphere.

Do take the above statement, which is filed under rumors for now, with a grain of salt. We sure do hope that Home is indeed coming soon, however. VERY VERY VERY soon.
