26 01 2008

Sony has developed the world’s smallest Blu-ray laser. The module both reads and writes the Blu-ray format.

Just how small is this Blu-ray laser? 3 millimeters on its longest side. You could lose it in a haystack. Read the rest of this entry »

Possible PS3 hack/exploit in RFOM!

20 01 2008

Something we PS3 owners have all be waiting…

Team ICE and StreetskaterFU have announced that that they’ve found a method to execute unsigned code on retail Sony PlayStation 3 units running firmware 2.10. If this proves to be true, then we might be seeing PS3 homebrew soon!

While the current method is still in its early phase, the hackers (and many members of the community) feel that this is very promising. What makes this hack work is a Resistance: Fall of Man exploit which allows the hackers to run SELF files in the PS3s operating system.

Sony confirm PS3 in-game XMB access!

10 01 2008

Sony Computer Entertainment’s running hot in the news waves right now, after PS3 Metal Gear Solid 4 exclusivity and BD Live caught on well at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show. But Sony’s Paul Purdy just turned up the heat to insanely sizzlin’, and it’s because he’s just confirmed a long-requested feature: in-game XMB access for the Sony PlayStation 3.

That’s right: we say confirmed. Word is that the bombshell was dropped at CES 2008 and the target period for the anticipated update would be within the Year of the Rat. That’s within this year folks! So we repeat: Xross Media Bar access while playing a game is coming to PlayStation 3 gamers soon.

But because Sony hasn’t divulged more information, we’re bound to hear more updates from its camp as time rolls by. More intel on this once the signals read five by five.

Haze coming in March 2008?

6 01 2008

Ubisoft’s PlayStation 3 exclusive Haze might be coming sooner than we think. In a previous article, the developers hinted that the game will be out in August this year. However, on the official PlayStation website, the game’s launch date is listed for March.

Haze is set in the year 2048. It thrusts players in the shoes of Shane Carpenter, a solider for Mantel Global Industries, an organization which provides military equipment and the performance-enhancing drug called Nectar.

However, when Carpenter realizes that Nectar is being used as a method of hiding the horrors of war, he jumps ship and hooks up with the enemy of the corporation. A group called the Promised Hand.

We’re pretty sure that the FPS fans reading this will be waiting to see if this holds true. Till we get official confirmation from either Sony or Ubisoft about the final release date of the game, all we can really do is wait and see if the game will hit store shelves in March 2008.

Unreal Tournament 3: PS3 mod cooking update coming soon

4 01 2008

Here’s some good news for the gamers with a knack for making and using mods for the PS3 port of Unreal Tournament 3. Epic Games’ Mark Rein dropped by the UT3 forums earlier today to announce that they’ll be releasing an update to the game’s Engine Editor. Quoting part of his announcement:

We’re very close to releasing an update to the Unreal Engine 3 editor, that comes with the PC version of UT3, that will allow UT3 mod-makers to cook their mods into the required PS3 format. We’ve been doing some internal testing and we’re hoping to expand to a wider group tomorrow or Friday.

Rein further added that this update should be up and about by next week. Well, here’s to hoping the update fixes some of the problems players were experiencing when they attempted to run user-created content on the game. We’ll let you know if anything new turns up.

Devil May Cry 4 PS3 update: 4900MB HDD install, PSN support

28 12 2007

A few members of the NeoGAF forums were able to get hold of the latest copy of Famitsu magazine and learned a couple of exciting details about the PlayStation 3 version of Devil May Cry 4 (also on Xbox 360 and PC).

This latest iteration of the DMC franchise was originally a PS3-exclusive but Capcom ultimately decided to have it as well on other next-gen platforms.

Despite that, it seems that DMC 4 PS3 is given enough attention especially with these features:

* HDD install is 4900MB (4.9GB).
* Save files are 3392KB.
* Some variety of PSN support.
* 5.1 LPCM audio.

While the save file and audio details are nothing new, we are interested about the rather huge amount of space the HDD install requires. If this turns out to be accurate, then we may be on our way to having a really seamless gameplay experience.

There is still no word regarding the specific features for the Xbox 360 and PC build but we believe that Capcom will soon be keeping all of us posted.

Warhawk booster pack now avaliable!

20 12 2007

Today the Warhawk booster pack was released for download (at a fee of £3.99).

The main features of this booster pack is the new level to play your online games, and a new vehicle; the dropship.

The drop ship is tremendously powerful, and has awesome defense. It can carry 6 people and a jeep at the same time… The downside is that it moves pretty slow around the maps.

Omega Dawn factory is the name of the new map for you to play around in. From what I’ve played so far, it’s a pretty cool map. It’s set at night, so obviously it’s dark throughout the map… Not too dark that you can’t see a thing though.

Have you guys downloaded the booster pack yet? Let me know what you think! :D

Sony planning to connect PS3 to various devices to increase sales

12 12 2007

In an effort to increase PlayStation 3 sales even further, Sony Corporation CEO Howard Stringer revealed their three-year business plan, which involves connecting their next-gen PlayStation 3 console to several other devices such as the PSP handheld and mobile phones.

Sony will first concentrate on connecting the PlayStation 3 to the PSP, and then will move on to other devices. Not much has been revealed about how exactly the PlayStation 3 will be connected to mobile phones, however.

This idea was a brainchild of former Sony Corp. CEO Nobuyuki Idei before he was replaced by Stringer.
